Getting Your CDL in Washington
How to book the skills test
Washington CDL skills tests are given by DOL examiners and by state-certified independent third-party examiners (TPEs). Call DOL at 360-902-3785 to schedule with a DOL examiner, or to get the authorization a TPE needs before they can book you. Bring your Washington license with the commercial learner's permit, proof of insurance, a safe commercial vehicle, and written authorization if the vehicle is borrowed. After passing all three parts, wait 24 hours and then book a licensing office appointment to be issued the CDL.
Wait times and timing tips
DOL does not publish wait times; TPEs are the faster route in most areas. If you fail you wait 3 days before a retest (no wait if the failure was an equipment problem), and test scores stay valid for 180 days from the first passed component.
Washington CDL fees
| Commercial learner's permit (180 days) | $40 |
| Truck or passenger skills test, DOL or TPE | $175 |
| School bus skills test | $100 (includes 2 attempts) |
| CDL license and endorsement fees | see the DOL fee page |
Agency fees only. ELDT training, the DOT medical exam, and third-party test fees are separate.
