Getting Your CDL in Ohio
How to book the skills test
Ohio splits CDL testing across three places: knowledge tests at a driver exam station, the CLP purchased at a deputy registrar agency, and the skills test at a state CDL skills testing location (found through the Ohio Department of Public Safety office locator) or a third-party testing facility that sets its own fees. Schedule the skills test once ELDT is complete, and buy the CDL from a deputy registrar before the CLP expires.
Wait times and timing tips
The BMV does not publish wait times. If any part of the skills test is failed you wait two days before a retest, and each retest at a state site is charged again per section, so nail the pre-trip inspection first.
Ohio CDL fees
| CDL temporary instruction permit (CLP) | $31.50 |
| First CDL, 4-year | $46.50 |
| First CDL, 8-year | $92 |
| State skills test: pre-trip $10 + basic skills $10 + road test $30 | $50 per attempt |
| Third-party skills test | set by the facility |
| CDL renewal | $49.25 (4-year) or $97.40 (8-year) |
Agency fees only. ELDT training, the DOT medical exam, and third-party test fees are separate.
What is specific to Ohio
