Getting Your CDL in New Jersey
How to book the skills test
In New Jersey the MVC gives the CDL skills test at its road test sites, by appointment only, 14 days after you pass the knowledge tests (unless the waiting period is waived). You must bring a commercial vehicle with current inspection, registration, and insurance, legible GVWR placards, and no cargo, plus a licensed driver qualified to operate that vehicle. Before any of this you need a basic New Jersey Class D license and an Examination Test Receipt from an MVC appointment.
Wait times and timing tips
The MVC does not publish wait times. Failing the road test means a wait of at least two weeks before the next attempt, and repeated failures can trigger a six-month wait, so prepare for the pre-trip inspection carefully.
