How to book the skills test

Michigan does not give CDL skills tests at Secretary of State offices. Book the on-road driving skills test with a state-approved driver testing business (a third-party tester) from the Secretary of State's searchable list, at least 2 days before the date you become eligible. Bring your Michigan photo license, your CLP, and your medical certificate, and the vehicle for the class you are testing in.

Wait times and timing tips

The Secretary of State does not publish wait times; availability depends on the testing business, so call two or three before you commit. Their fees are set by each business and are not regulated by the state, so ask about the initial fee, the retest fee, the refund policy, and what happens if your vehicle fails the pre-test inspection.

Michigan CDL fees

CDL correction after passing the skills test (added to your standard license)$9
Each endorsement (group endorsement fee)$5 per endorsement
New photo license, when required$18 ($33 enhanced license)
Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)confirm current amount at the Secretary of State office
Skills testset by the driver testing business (not regulated by the state)

Agency fees only. ELDT training, the DOT medical exam, and third-party test fees are separate.

What is specific to Michigan

  1. You must hold your CLP and practice under the supervision of a CDL holder for at least 14 days before the skills test.
  2. Knowledge tests are taken at a Secretary of State office; fail one and you wait one day before each retake.
  3. You can get a CLP before finishing Entry-Level Driver Training, but ELDT must be complete before the skills test, and before the HazMat knowledge test.
  4. After passing the skills test you return to a Secretary of State office to pay the endorsement fee and the $9 correction; the corrected CDL is mailed to you.
  5. A passed skills test is valid for one year; apply for the CDL within that year or all tests must be retaken.
  6. Michigan verifies ELDT completion automatically through the federal Training Provider Registry, so there is no certificate to carry.
