Getting Your CDL in Indiana
How to book the skills test
In Indiana the BMV issues the CLP and CDL, but the CDL skills exam is taken at a BMV-authorized third-party skills exam site (the BMV publishes the list, with sites across the state including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Gary, Kokomo, Muncie, and Jeffersonville). Contact the site directly to schedule. Your Medical Examiner's Certificate must already be on file with the BMV, and you need a valid Indiana license and a CLP before testing.
Wait times and timing tips
The BMV does not publish wait times; each exam site keeps its own schedule. The BMV caps what sites can charge, so compare a couple of sites near you for both price and availability.
Indiana CDL fees
| Commercial learner's permit | $35 |
| Commercial driver's license | $25 |
| Add or remove a CDL endorsement | $19 |
| Third-party skills exam (BMV maximum, vehicle rental extra) | $200 first attempt, $150 second, $100 each additional |
| School bus skills test | $100 |
Agency fees only. ELDT training, the DOT medical exam, and third-party test fees are separate.
What is specific to Indiana
- Before a CDL is issued you must watch the BMV's instructional video on recognizing and reporting human trafficking.
- Your medical examiner sends the MEC to the National Registry, which passes it to the BMV electronically; the BMV will not issue a CLP or CDL without it on file.
- A CDL expired, disqualified, or surrendered for more than 3 years means starting over as a new applicant.
- Skills-exam fees are capped by the BMV per attempt, and retests get cheaper.
