Getting Your CDL in Connecticut
How to book the skills test
Connecticut DMV gives CDL skills tests at two DMV test sites: Mansfield (190 South Frontage Road) and Winsted (151 Torrington Road; no Class A tests there). Private applicants request a date by completing form R-405 (Request for a CDL Exam from a Private Citizen) and emailing it to dmv-detu@ct.gov; DMV replies with a test date within 3 business days. Students of licensed CDL schools are scheduled through their school. Bring your CLP, medical certificate, and a vehicle for the class you are testing in.
Wait times and timing tips
DMV assigns skills-test dates rather than letting you pick a slot, so send the R-405 as soon as your CLP has been held 14 days. If you fail, there is a minimum 7-day wait before a retest, and after passing you wait 2 business days for the result to be entered before the CDL can be issued. All DMV offices are appointment-only; walk-ins face long waits.
